The industry of factory made mortars dates from the end of the 19th century, but the use of
mortars dates back thousands of years. More than 10,000 years ago lime mortar was discovered
in Galilee near YIFTAH'EL (Israel).
Protective-coatings, water-resistant and coloured improved mortars were used by the Aztecs.
They comprised pozzolanic mortars and natural resins.
All masonry construction demands the use of masonry mortars together with internal
plasters and sometimes external renders.
But the application and use of mortar is not limited to masonry constructions.
The field of floor screed mortar is a growing market. There are many special kinds of mortar
which are used for concrete repair, for tile fixing, for roofs, for the anchoring of
bolts and for many other applications. In addition, the external thermal insulating
composite systems (ETICS) are also a product of the mortar industry, playing an important
role in energy saving measures.
For many decades users and specifiers of mortars have demanded higher performance
and easier application properties. In Europe in particular the mortar industry is based
on modern automated factories, making it possible to substitute quality controlled
products to compete with mixtures made on the building site without such control.
The mortar industry is linked to the use of natural materials (aggregates, lime,
cement, gypsum) to which admixtures may be added to give characteristics and properties
to meet the specific demands of the users.
